Social Media – A Relationship Strengthening Platform Or…?

Is social media good for relationships or is it harmful? Are messages like “stay in touch with family and friends” strengthening relationships or devaluing them instead? Umair Haque explains in his Harvard Business Review article entitled “The Social Media Bubble”

He has used the economics term “inflation” to explain the devaluing effect of social media. During inflation, money circulation is higher but its value is at the lowest as the buying power becomes restricted due to increased prices. Now implying this theory upon social media, you have to presume that we have less attention to give to relationships, and every new relationship we establish decreases the value of the existing ones.

Apart from this unique but interesting thought, social media is receiving many praises from the online community and many businesses are busy promoting themselves through effective social media optimization techniques.

According to a more general view, platforms like Facebook and Twitter are a great way to stay in touch with all those people whom you can’t otherwise. How much do you know about your neighbor? How much do you know about a relative sitting in some other place of the world? Probably nothing! But these social arenas allow you to view their existing activities in just a couple of clicks and get to know what they’ve been doing lately through status updates, pictures uploads and so much more.

How can social media impact our relationships is how we use it as an individual. In fact, social media is a way to reinforce our weak relationships, rather than devalue them. Give it a thought!
